Description

The U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of beautiful floral-themed stamps with Botanical Art. The stamp art features ten designs, each a detail of an illustration from an American nursery catalog printed between 1891 and 1912. The design details are courtesy of The New York Botanical Garden; the catalogs are part of NYBG's Nursery and Seed Catalog Collection, one of the largest and most important such collections in the U.S. In the mid-19th century, as more people discovered the joys of ornamental and recreational gardening, thriving commercial greenhouses and nurseries marketed plants to the eager gardeners. To entice buyers, the nurseries created colorful catalogs illustrated with beautiful blossoms and lush foliage. The illustrations were idealized, romantic versions of what plants could look like, but they fueled many a garden dream. The artists responsible for the work seen on early nursery catalogs are mostly unknown to us now, but their captivating work lives on. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps. The Botanical Art stamps are being issued as Forever stamps. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price. This listing is for 10 new forever stamps.

3. Celebrate 20 x Forever US Postage Stamps

Feature

Celebrate 20 x Forever US Postage Stamps

Description

Good times call for good wishes, and the U.S. Postal Service gets in on the act with the Neon Celebrate! Forever stamp, first issued in 2011, and reissued in 2015. Bringing an extra wish for happiness to anyone celebrating a special time, this stamp features a brilliantly colored design crafted out of neon and glass that adds a spark to greeting cards, invitations, and gift-bearing envelopes and packages. No matter the occasion-birthday, anniversary, engagement, wedding, new job, retirement-this stamp will add another congratulatory wish to the good times being acknowledged. Since the early 20th century, designers have made use of the fact that neon, argon, and a few other gases, glow when an electrical charge passes through them. In 1910, French scientist Georges Claude (1870-1960) first presented the neon lamp to the public in Paris. During the 1920s, neon signs became a popular form of advertising in the United States after the Packard Motor Car dealership in Los Angeles displayed the first documented neon commercial sign in the country. Today, in addition to creating signage, artists work with neon as an expressive medium, filling and shaping glass tubes into an infinite variety of colorful images for exhibit.

Description

Mythologized and misunderstood, few creatures capture the imagination as sharks do. With this sheet of 20 stamps, the U.S. Postal Service showcases five types of these amazing fish, which emerged long before dinosaurs and are now uniquely adapted for their top-predator role in the marine food chain. Each realistic stamp image is labeled by species: ?MAKO SHARK,? ?THRESHER SHARK,? ?GREAT WHITE SHARK,? ?WHALE SHARK,? and ?HAMMERHEAD SHARK." Styled in lowercase letters, the words ?usa forever? also appear on each stamp. As difficult as it can be to put our primal fears and vulnerabilities in perspective, people are realizing that we pose far greater danger to sharks than they do to us. They are overfished for food and sport. The practice of ?finning??cutting off shark fins for a soup delicacy, only to throw the incapacitated animal back in the water?dooms a great many sharks. They are slower to reach reproductive maturity than other fish, and though they bear more developed offspring, because of unsustainable fishing this is no longer an evolutionary advantage over egg laying. Many populations are in collapse. There is new hope, however. Shark ecotourism has become popular worldwide with enthusiasts excited to see these graceful fish underwater. Shark allure is resulting in increased study and greater understanding of these fantastic, still mysterious creatures.

Description

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates the beauty of flowers from American gardens. The four stamps feature still-life paintings of bountiful floral bouquets.

The paintings were inspired by floral still lifes created by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th and 18th centuries. Each stamp features one of four different paintings of flowers gathered from the garden and artfully arranged in a container. One stamp features red camellias and yellow forsythia in a yellow pitcher, while on another there are white peonies and pink tree peonies in a clear vase. An arrangement of white hydrangeas, white and pink roses, green hypericum berries, and purple lisianthus in a white vase graces another stamp, while blue hydrangeas in a blue pot appear on another.

The floral paintings of the Dutch and Flemish artists featured exuberant, massed arrangements, which gave the impression of wild abandon and impromptu creativity. However, the arrangements were in reality carefully thought out and many times purely imaginary-and frequently botanically impossible. Though they looked as if they had just been plucked from the garden, the bouquets might include flowers that did not bloom during the same season or sometimes even grow in the same country.

Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps with existing art by Elizabeth Brandon.

Flowers from the Garden is being issued as a First-Class Mail Forever booklet of 20 stamps. These Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

Made in the USA.
