It seems that every so often there is a trial of the century, usually involving celebrities or a crime that is particularly heinous. The 1990s had the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, a crime which football super-star O.J. Simpson was tried and ultimately found not guilty in the criminal court, (although he was later found to be responsible for the deaths in a civil trial and ordered to pay millions of dollars to the families of the victims.) The 1980s had their own trials of the centuries as well, and this was the time when CNN and other 24-hour news stations became part of the American culture. One of the most famous of the well-publicized crimes was the murder of a well-known and respected cardiologist, as well as the author of The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet, who was shot to death by an almost 70-year-old headmistress of an upscale Washington, D.C. elite private boarding school for girls.
