Sycamore trees belong to the genus Platanus, which includes several deciduous species found in temperate climates around the world. Platanus racemosa, also known as the western sycamore or California sycamore, is widely used in landscaping on the West Coast for its ornamental bicolored bark, palmate leaves and stately, somewhat open growth habit. Like most species within its genus, the western sycamore grows readily from seed and will swiftly attain a mature height of 40 to 100 feet.
