Description

American Chestnut Trees were the most important food and timber tree in the Eastern hardwood forest years ago. In 1904, Chestnut blight fungus devastated the population of these magnificent trees. Slowly but surely, the American Chestnut is making a comeback with the help of science. The dense foliage grows into a rounded canopy providing shade and sweet tasting chestnuts for human consumption and wildlife. The leaves are ovate having sharp, spear-like points and are about 5" long and 2" wide. The topside of the leaf is a dark green with a light green underside turning a bright yellow, gold and brown for fall. The American Chestnut Tree is the tallest of the chestnuts know to grow up to 100 feet! For success in growing this historical tree, plant in average, somewhat dry, well-drained, acidic soil with full sun.
