Description

Celebrate "Old Glory" with this patriotic 2016 U.S. Flag stamp. The American flag has long symbolized the strength and spirit of our nation. This 2016 U.S. Flag First-Class Mail stamp features a detail of Emmanuel Faure's vivid photograph of a U.S. flag waving against the background of the sky. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act, stating that the U.S. flag should consist of 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a blue field. In 1818, Congress passed legislation stipulating that the number of stars on the American flag should match the number of states in the Union. There are 13 stripes and 50 stars on the current flag. The words "USA FOREVER" are printed on the bottom of the stamp. Terrence W. McCaffrey was the art director of the project and Greg Breeding designed the stamp. The self-adhesive 2016 U.S. Flag First-Class Mail stamp listing is for a double-sided book of 20 stamps.

Description

During the Christmas holidays, the humble birth of the baby Jesus is depicted in Nativity scenes that are often the centerpiece of many church and family devotions.

The stamp art features a peaceful yet powerful image of the Holy Family silhouetted against a dawn sky. The baby Jesus lies in a straw-filled manger in the center of the picture with Mary kneeling to the right and Joseph standing to the left, holding a lantern. A bright star shines over the scene.

The Gospel of Luke relates how Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to register for the census decreed by the Roman emperor. The Gospel says: "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

That simple description has been an inspiration for artists since at least the fourth century. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi is believed to have created the first crche. Derived from an Old French word for "manger" or "crib," crche came to signify a representation of the Nativity scene. Since then, crches have ranged in style from simple sets holding only the Holy Family to elaborate, life-size panoramas that might include shepherds, the Three Wise Men, animals, angels, or the Star of Bethlehem. As the tradition spread to other areas of the world, the crches came to reflect local cultures, with figures in native costume surrounded by animals familiar to the crche maker-a Kenyan elephant, a Navajo skunk, or a Peruvian llama, for example.

Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by Nancy Stahl.

Nativity is being issued in booklets of 20 Forever stamps. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

5. Celebrate 20 x Forever US Postage Stamps

Feature

Celebrate 20 x Forever US Postage Stamps

Description

Good times call for good wishes, and the U.S. Postal Service gets in on the act with the Neon Celebrate! Forever stamp, first issued in 2011, and reissued in 2015. Bringing an extra wish for happiness to anyone celebrating a special time, this stamp features a brilliantly colored design crafted out of neon and glass that adds a spark to greeting cards, invitations, and gift-bearing envelopes and packages. No matter the occasion-birthday, anniversary, engagement, wedding, new job, retirement-this stamp will add another congratulatory wish to the good times being acknowledged. Since the early 20th century, designers have made use of the fact that neon, argon, and a few other gases, glow when an electrical charge passes through them. In 1910, French scientist Georges Claude (1870-1960) first presented the neon lamp to the public in Paris. During the 1920s, neon signs became a popular form of advertising in the United States after the Packard Motor Car dealership in Los Angeles displayed the first documented neon commercial sign in the country. Today, in addition to creating signage, artists work with neon as an expressive medium, filling and shaping glass tubes into an infinite variety of colorful images for exhibit.

Description

With the new U.S. Flag stamp, the Postal Service continues its tradition of celebrating patriotism with one of the most recognizable symbols of the nation. The stamp features a detail from a photograph of the billowing Stars and Stripes. Terrence W. McCaffrey was the art director and Greg Breeding designed the stamp with an existing photograph of the flag taken by Tom Grill. This is for a new roll of 100 stamps. Check to make sure you have genuine stamps, and not counterfeits. Mail sent with counterfeit stamps can be confiscated. Genuine stamps will have microprinted letters USPS on every stamp. On the 2017 variety these letters are typically found on the right edge of the flag, visible with a magnifying glass (such as one of the images above). Genuine stamps have plate numbers such as "P1111" that appear 3 or 4 times along the bottom roll (usually every 25 stamps or so), as in the first product image. With a shortwave UV light, genuine stamps will shine with a green phosphorescent glow, while counterfeit stamps just shine bright white. Under a magnifying glass the counterfeit stamps will exhibit lower print quality, with noticeable dots and lines, while the genuine stamps appear smooth.

Four birds pictured on stamps

Description

With the release of the Coastal Birds postcard stamps, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates four eye-catching birds: the red knot (Calidris canutus), king eider (Somateria spectabilis), roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja), and magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens). The stamps feature highly stylized, digital portraits of each bird. Feeding on everything from crustaceans and mollusks to insects and fish, coastal birds can be spotted along beaches, rocky coastlines, and mudflats, as well as in lagoons, wetlands, and other saltwater and freshwater habitats. They account for some of the world's largest breeding and migratory populations. The Coastal Birds stamps feature the art of illustrator Tyler Lang. Greg Breeding was the art director. The word "POSTCARD" on the stamps indicates their usage value. Like a Forever stamp, it will always be equal in value to the applicable price for the price category printed on them at the time of use. **Please Note this is a coil of 20 stamps, not a page**

Description

Celebrate the fun and beauty of seashells with four new postcard stamps from the U.S. Postal Service.

Whimsical and lighthearted, the stamp art features stylized depictions of four seashells: the alphabet cone, the zebra nerite, the Pacific calico scallop, and the Queen conch, frequently called the pink conch. The horizontal swaths of white and blue in the background suggest waves washing the shells onto a beach.

The hard, protective external skeletons of marine mollusks, seashells are composed largely of calcium carbonate secreted by the mollusks, mantle. Frequently ornamented with arrangements of ribs, spines, cords, scales, and grooves, the shells provide protection against predators, aid in burrowing into the sand, and give support to the soft-bodied animals.

Seashells have served many purposes throughout history-as jewelry, decoration, cooking vessels, lamps, even currency-but they were also highly collectible as objects of beauty and scientific study, as they are today. Around the world, clubs and shows attract enthusiasts, who continue to collect shells for their elegance, beautiful colors, and rich variety of shapes.

Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamps. Sergio Baradat created the stamp art.

The word "POSTCARD" on the stamps indicates their usage value. Like a Forever stamp, these stamps will always be valid for the rate printed on them.

Made in the USA.
