Feature

Structural Geology

Description

This market-leading textbook has been fully updated in response to extensive user feedback. It includes a new chapter on joints and veins, additional examples from around the world, stunning new field photos, and extended online resources with new animations and exercises. The book's practical emphasis, hugely popular in the first edition, features applications in the upper crust, including petroleum and groundwater geology, highlighting the importance of structural geology in exploration and exploitation of petroleum and water resources. Carefully designed full-colour illustrations work closely with the text to support student learning, and are supplemented with high-quality photos from around the world. Examples and parallels drawn from practical everyday situations engage students, and end-of chapter review questions help them to check their understanding. Updated e-learning modules are available online (www.cambridge.org/fossen2e) and further reinforce key topics using summaries, innovative animations to bring concepts to life, and additional examples and figures.

2. Structural Geology of Rocks and Regions

Description

Relates the physical and geometric elegance of geologic structures within the Earth's crust and the ways in which these structures reflect the nature and origin of crystal deformation through time. The main thrust is on applications in regional tectonics, exploration geology, active tectonics and geohydrology. Techniques, experiments, and calculations are described in detail, with the purpose of offering active participation and discovery through laboratory and field work.

3. Structural Geology

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

When first published, Structural Geology broke new ground by offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated survey of the evolution of the earths outer layers, presented within the unifying context of structural and plate tectonics. Now this highly regarded text returns, in thoroughly updated new edition designed to show students how geologists interpret deformations in the earths crust as clues to the processes that are continually recasting the planet.

4. Structural Analysis and Synthesis: A Laboratory Course in Structural Geology

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

This widely used, highly readable introduction to structural analysis is specifically designed to support the laboratory work of undergraduates in structural geology courses.

The new third edition includes:

  • New and amended exercises and redrafted figures to improve clarity
  • A single fold-out map of the Bree Creek Quadrangle a mythical site used to help students analyze various aspects of the geologic structures exposed within this quadrangle and ultimately to develop a grand synthesis
  • A user-friendly spiral binding ideal for work in the lab or out in the field

An Instructor manual CD-ROM for this title is available. Please contact our Higher Education team at [email protected] for more information.

5. Basic Methods of Structural Geology

Description

Complete coverage of all the basic topics of structural geology.

6. Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics (Second Edition)

Description

The Second Edition of Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics takes a balanced approach to the subjectemphasizing links between structural features at all scales (microscopic, hand-specimen, outcrop, mountain-range) and deformation processes.

Earth Structure shows how assemblages of structures relate to different geological settings in the context of plate tectonics. Chapters are self-contained modules that can be arranged in various sequences depending on instructor preference, and the book uses a conversational writing style, employing familiar analogies and field examples. Mathematical analysis, where used in the book, is kept at a basic level.

Popular features include:

Self-contained chapters on deformation mechanisms (both brittle and plastic) and deformation products (fractures, faults, folds, and fabrics) that allow instructors to provide a foundation of understanding on "how" deformation takes place, as well as a thorough description of what deformation causes.

Whole chapters on tectonic settings. These chapters allow the book to be used either for a one-semester course that relates deformation to tectonic settings or for a succession of two courses (one on structure and one on tectonics), thus enabling students to buy just one book.

Essays on Regional Perspectives that provide information on tectonic analysis for eleven regions around the globe written by specialists in the areadiscussions include the European Alps, the Altaids, the Appalachians, and the Cascadia Wedge.

Over 570 detailed figures providing informative illustration of concepts.
570 black & white figures

7. Structural Geology of Rocks and Regions, 2nd Edition

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

When author George Davis conceptualized the cover illustration for the first edition of Structural Geology of Rocks and Regions, he wanted to emphasize that the human adventure of learning comes from doing; and that new insight springs from careful, detailed examination of field relationships, viewed at all scales from rocks to regions. He asked illustrator David Fisher to combine four photos into the single painting, you see here. The geologist is enveloped by challenging structural relationships of folded rocks in outcrop; the curvature of back and neck, torqued as eyes and brain move closer and closer to clipboard, is the classic language of geologic mapping. When George Davis and new co-author Steve Reynolds contemplated the cover illustration for the second edition of Structural Geology of Rocks and Regions, they asked: "Who else is in the picture?" Stepping back, and handing David Fisher a couple of additional photos, the scene suddenly changed. The original geologist who had been sitting on the outcrop recording data is now up and walking around, gathering new data. A second geologist has moved into the new foreground, mapping and sketching a system of small-scale imbricate faults. Again, the head is torqued to handle the requirements of fine description and careful mapping. Like so many structural geologists, she seems to thrive on visualization of three-dimensional relationships.

8. Structural Geology: An Introduction To Geometrical Techniques

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

This combination of text and lab book presents an entirely different approach to structural geology. Designed for undergraduate laboratory classes, it provides a step-by-step guide for solving geometric problems arising from structural field observations. The book discusses both traditional methods and cutting-edge approaches, with emphasis given to graphical methods and visualization techniques that support students in tackling challenging two- and three-dimensional problems. Numerous exercises encourage practice in using the techniques, and demonstrate how field observations can be converted into useful information about geological structures and the processes responsible for creating them. This updated fourth edition incorporates new material on stress, deformation, strain and flow, and the underlying mathematics of the subject. With stereonet plots and solutions to the exercises available online at www.cambridge.org/ragan, this book is a key resource for undergraduates, advanced students and researchers wanting to improve their practical skills in structural geology.

9. Fundamentals of Structural Geology

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

Fundamentals of Structural Geology provides a new framework for the investigation of geological structures by integrating field mapping and mechanical analysis. Assuming a basic knowledge of physical geology, introductory calculus and physics, it emphasizes the observational data, modern mapping technology, principles of continuum mechanics, and the mathematical and computational skills, necessary to quantitatively map, describe, model, and explain deformation in Earth's lithosphere. By starting from the fundamental conservation laws of mass and momentum, the constitutive laws of material behavior, and the kinematic relationships for strain and rate of deformation, the authors demonstrate the relevance of solid and fluid mechanics to structural geology. This book offers a modern quantitative approach to structural geology for advanced students and researchers in structural geology and tectonics. It is supported by a website hosting images from the book, additional colour images, student exercises and MATLAB scripts. Solutions to the exercises are available to instructors.
