1. Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils
Description
Your guide to the design and construction of foundations on expansive soilsFoundation Engineering for Expansive Soils fills a significant gap in the current literature by presenting coverage of the design and construction of foundations for expansive soils. Written by an expert author team with nearly 70 years of combined industry experience, this important new work is the only modern guide to the subject, describing proven methods for identifying and analyzing expansive soils and developing foundation designs appropriate for specific locations.
Expansive soils are found worldwide and are the leading cause of damage to structural roads. The primary problem that arises with regard to expansive soils is that deformations are significantly greater than in non-expansive soils and the size and direction of the deformations are difficult to predict. Now, Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils gives engineers and contractors coverage of this subject from a design perspective, rather than a theoretical one. Plus, they'll have access to case studies covering the design and construction of foundations on expansive salts from both commercial and residential projects.
- Provides a succinct introduction to the basics of expansive soils and their threats
- Includes information on both shallow and deep foundation design
- Profiles soil remediation techniques, backed-up with numerous case studies
- Covers the most commonly used laboratory tests and site investigation techniques used for establishing the physical properties of expansive soils
If you're a practicing civil engineer, geotechnical engineer or contractor, geologist, structural engineer, or an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student of one of these disciplines, Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils is a must-have addition to your library of resources.
2. The Mechanics of Soils and Foundations, Second Edition
Feature
Taylor Francis GroupDescription
Ideal for undergraduates of geotechnical engineering for civil engineers, this established textbook sets out the basic theories of soil mechanics in a clear and straightforward way; combining both classical and critical state theories and giving students a good grounding in the subject which will last right through into a career as a geotechnical engineer.
The subject is broken down into discrete topics which are presented in a series of short, focused chapters with clear and accessible text that develops from the purely theoretical to discussing practical applications. Soil behaviour is described by relatively simple equations with clear parameters while a number of worked examples and simple experimental demonstrations are included to illustrate the principles involved and aid reader understanding.
3. Soils and Foundations (8th Edition)
Feature
Used Book in Good ConditionDescription
Ideal for beginners, SOILS AND FOUNDATIONS, 8/e presents all essential aspects of soils and foundations in as simple and direct a manner as possible. Filled with worked examples, step-by-step solutions, and hands-on practice problems, it emphasizes design and practical applications supported by basic theory. Throughout, the authors promote learning through the extensive use of diagrams, charts, and illustrations. Coverage includes: engineering properties of soils: soil exploration, compaction, stabilization, and consolidation; water in soil; subsurface stresses; settlement of structures; shear strength; shallow and deep foundations; lateral earth pressure; retaining structures, and stability analysis of slopes. This edition's new coverage includes Pressuremeter and Dilatometer tests, water flow characterization with Bernoulli's Theorem, dewatering, uplift pressure on dams, and subsurface stresses caused by overlying soil masses.

Description
For courses on Soils, Soil Mechanics, or Soils/Foundations in Departments of Civil Technology, Construction Technology, or Civil and Geotechnical Engineering.Written in a clear, direct style, this practical text introduces students to the essentials of soil mechanics and foundations. Major emphasis is given to design and practical applications, which are supported by basic theory.5. From the Soil: The Foundations of Chinese Society
Feature
From the Soil The Foundations of Chinese SocietyDescription
Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng's translation captures Fei's jargonless, straightforward style of writing. Their introduction describes Fei's education and career as a sociologist, the fate of his writings on and off the Mainland, and the sociological significance of his analysis. The translators' epilogue highlights the social reforms for China that Fei drew from his analysis and advocated in a companion text written in the same period.

10. Foundations on Expansive Soils (Developments in Geotechnical Engineering)
Description
Since the first edition of Foundations on Expansive Soils appeared in 1975, considerable advancements have been made in this field. While most of the research has been concentrated in the area of heave prediction, identification of swelling soil and soil suction, studies on unsaturated soil, finite element analysis and stress modeling have also commanded a great deal of attention. More and more nations are becoming aware of the damage caused by expansive soils and it could be said that more than half the world is affected by swelling soils. As a consulting geotechnical engineer, the author has seen little advancement in the practical application of theoretical approaches towards solving engineering problems. Both geotechnical engineers and structural engineers adhere to the initial concept that by isolating water, the problem can be resolved. Unfortunately, more and more structural failure has been reported. This book provides the practicing engineer with a summary of the state-of-the art knowledge of expansive soils and practical solutions based upon the author's experience. Part I discusses theory and practice, and summarizes some of the theoretical physical properties of expansive soils. It also discusses various techniques employed to found structures on expansive soils such as drilled pier foundation, mat foundation, moisture control, soil replacement, and chemical stabilization. Part II presents six detailed case studies. A considerable amount of new material has been incorporated into each chapter of this revised edition, particularly on highway pavement and soil suction.
