Feature

In Hora Mortis Under the Iron of the Moon Poems

Description

Internationally acclaimed Austrian novelist, playwright, and memoirist Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) has been compared to Kafka and Beckett, and critics have ranked his novels among the masterpieces of the twentieth century. But in fact he began his career in the 1950s as a poet, publishing three books of well-received verse before turning to fiction. In Hora Mortis / Under the Iron of the Moon is the first book of his expressionist-like poetry to be published in English. Bringing together Bernhard's second and third books of poetry, the collection's short, untitled lyrics reveal his early explorations of themes that would continue to preoccupy him in his novels, plays, and other writings--especially his intense ambivalence toward the land and people of Austria and their then-recent Nazi past. As the translator James Reidel writes in his preface, "Bernhard found Austrian soil . . . to be like a hair shirt and a blanket. It is a killing ground but with a postcard setting." In poems that both subvert and pay homage to such influences as Georg Trakl, Bernhard begins to develop his characteristic dark humor while exploring themes of nature, death, meaninglessness, and faith.

Description

Beloved Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard (193189) began his career in the early 1950s as a poet. Over the next decade, Bernhard wrote thousands of poems and published four volumes of intensely wrought and increasingly personal verse, with such titles asOn Earth and in Hell, InHoraMortis, andUnder the Iron of the Moon. Bernhards early poetry, bearing the influence of GeorgTrakl, begins with a deep connection to his Austrian homeland. As his poems saw publication and recognition, Bernhard seemed always on the verge of joining the ranks ofIngeborgBachmann, PaulCelan, and other young post-war poets writing in German. During this time, however, his poems became increasingly obsessive, filled with anundulantself-pity, counterpointed by a defamatory, bardicvoice utterly estranged from his country, all of which resulted in a magisterial work of anti-poetryone that represents Bernhards own harrowing experience, with the leitmotif ofsuccessfailure, that makes his fiction such a pleasure.

For all of these reasons, Bernhards Collected Poems, translated into English for the first time by James Reidel, is a key to understanding the irascible black comedy found in virtually all of Bernhards writingseven down to his last will and testament. There is much to be found in these pages for Bernhard fans of every stripe.

Feature

On Earth and in Hell Early Poems

Description

The first English translation of the earliest poetry of brilliant and disruptive Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard, widely considered one of the most innovative and original authors of the twentieth century and often associated with fellow mavericks Beckett, Kafka and Dostoevsky. A master of language, whose body of work was described in a New York Times book review as the most significant literary achievement since World War II, Bernhards On Earth and in Hell offers a distilled perspective on the essence of his artistry and his theme of death as the only reality. A remarkable achievement by highly-respected translator Peter Waugh.

9. Einerseits und Andererseits: Essays zur Prosa Thomas Bernhards (Literature and the Sciences of Man) (German Edition)
