Poet in New York

Description

A newly revised edition of the insightful poetic cycle by one of the key figures of modern literature

Written while Federico Garca Lorca was a student at Columbia University in 192930, Poet in New York is one of the most important books he produced, and certainly one of the most important books ever published about New York City. Indeed, it is a book that changed the direction of poetry in both Spain and the Americas, a pathbreaking and defining work of modern literature.
Timed to coincide with the citywide celebration of Garca Lorca in New York planned for 2013, this edition, which has been revised once again by the renowned Garca Lorca scholar Christopher Maurer, includes thrilling materialnew photographs, new and emended lettersthat has only recently come to light. Complementing these additions are Garca Lorca's witty and insightful letters to his family describing his feelings about America and his temporary home there (a dorm room in Columbia's John Jay Hall), the annotated photographs that accompany those letters, a prose poem, extensive notes, and an interpretive lecture by Garca Lorca himself.
An excellent introduction to the work of a key figure of modern poetry, this bilingual edition of Poet in New York, a strange, timeless, vital book of verse, is also an exposition of the American city in the twentieth century.

4. Poem of the Deep Song (Spanish Edition)

Feature

Used Book in Good Condition

Description

Poema del cante jondo and Romancero Gitano, the books of poems that Lorca wrote first, out of his excited response to gypsy music, poetry, and dance all around him in Granada, contain some of his most powerful and trenchant lyrical work, original, inimitable, daring, and a clear expression of the duende, the Dionysian daemon in poetry, of which he wrote eloquently. A new, fresh, consistent translationand Mr. Angels is all of theseis a welcome return to that wild dance, in this bilingual edition.W.S. Merwin

Cante jondo
. Deep Song. A poem meant to be sung, not with a pretty voice but with a cry, to break the silence and stillness of the body. A rustic form of flamenco. A poem written to remind Spain of its deep musical soul, the primitive song of the Andalusian Gypsies. A poem by Federico Garca Lorca written in 1921 when he was only twenty-three and had but fifteen years left to live before the Franco regime murdered him in the hills of Granada.

Translator Ralph Angel returns to Lorcas strange, unique rhythms and to the irrational, intuitive duende. This incantatory translation, every bit as revolutionary as the original was almost a century before, reconfirms what Lorca said of this work, that it is a slammer, a wavering emission of the voice . . . [that] makes the tightly closed flowers of the semitones blossom into a thousand petals.

Feature

Oxford University Press, USA

Description

Federico Garca Lorca is perhaps the most celebrated of all twentieth-century Spanish writers, known not only for his plays but also for several collections of poems published both in his short lifetime and after. Lorca's poetry is steeped in the land, climate, and folklore of his native Andalusia, though he writes memorably of New York and Cuba too. Writing often in modernist idiom, and full of startling imagery, he evokes a world of intense feelings, silent suffering, and dangerous love.
This unique parallel-text edition balances poems from Lorca's early collections with his better-known later work, providing a clear vision of his poetic development and drawing attention to the brilliance and originality of some of the earlier work. Key poems from all Lorca's collections appear here, including the recently discovered Sonnets of Dark Love. Martin Sorrell's translations are thoughtful and accomplished, and D. Gareth Walters's shrewd Introduction, with its distinctive focus on the achievements of the poet, gives a clear and balanced appraisal of the poetry, while steering away from the tendency to mythologize Lorca's life and death. This edition also includes helpful notes, a bibliography, a chronology, and an index of titles.

11. Romancero Gitano / The Gypsy Ballads of Garcia Lorca (Spanish Edition)

Description

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Federico Garca Lorca wrote the Gypsy Ballads between 1924 and 1927. When the book was published it caused a sensation in the literary world.

Drawing on the traditional Spanish ballad form, Lorca described his Romancero Gitano as 'the poem of Andaluca...A book that hardly expresses visible Andalusia at all, but where hidden Andaluca trembles'.

Seeking to relate the nature of his proud and troubled region of Spain, he drew on a traditional gypsy form; yet the homely, unpretentious style of these poems barely disguises the undercurrents of conflicted identity never far from Lorca's work.

12. Gypsy Ballads: A New Translation of the Romancero Gitano by Federico Garcia Lorca

Description

Literary translation is a daring act. The risk involved is compounded when dealing with a monumentally famous and intricate work of poetry such as Federico Garca Lorca's Romancero Gitano (1924 - 1927). Still, some works are so brilliant that they demand the attempt because they deserve the widest possible audience. I am certainly not the first one to make this attempt with the Gypsy Ballads (there have been many over the years). But it may also be true that every generation needs its own translation of major works because languages are living things that are always on the move. In this translation I have used my best judgment in the selection of vocabulary, meter, cadence and rhyme in English that captures the essence of what these eighteen original ballads convey to me. If this English rendering sings a little and sticks in the mind of English speakers the way Garca Lorcas own words do in the Spanish-speaking world then I will have done justice to his poetic tower of song.
